Christmas and New Year holiday break is the best time of the year to pack up and go far away from the busy city and forget about work. We call it a holiday break to unwind. New Zealand is one of those countries that you can find heaps of campers in every season of the year. Non-stop tourist goes with their camper van or trailer for camping.
Tent camping is one of our favorites simple accommodation every time my husband and I went on holiday. Every time we build our tent we are also building our relationship as a Christian married couple. The teamwork, communication, and patience plus the heat of the sun will test you. Just like most of the time, we assemble our tent we always forget which side is the front and back and we have to keep turning the tent and the cover and decide.
Kohaihai Campsite
The Kohaihai Campsite is part of the Department of Conservation (DoC). I was amazed by this place where we camp in front of the mountains and estuary while we can hear the massive waves of the sea. So far this is the best camping site that my husband and I stayed with our tent Kathmandu Retreat 180.
West coast gets a lot of rain so with the weather forecast we booked and stayed our 2 first nights at the Last Resort. But we wish we spend 1 more night at Kohaihai campsite as we felt very relax and on a real holiday with the magnificent view we have in front of our tent. I enjoyed cooking in my open kitchen for 1 day.
If you plan to camp here you can just drive through(just what we did) and get your booking at the honesty box. Just fill in the form and put your payment in the box. If you are generous by heart you can give more as it is so cheap of what you can get that the mother nature offers you. And make sure to apply insect repellent to get rid of sandflies.

Road to Kohaihai campsite
Road to Kohaihai camping ground KarameaThe road to Kohaihai campsite is more on gravel. Expect potholes and bumpy ride. Big 4 wheel drive cars are much better and for small cars, you have to drive a wee bit slow and get ready to pull over if another car is coming from the other side as the road is quite narrow.
I really enjoyed the Nikau palm trees along the way to the campsite. It feels like I am in my home tropical country. The West Coast, especially in Karamea, are very reach of Nikau palms trees and if you walk to the Heaphy tracks you will be surrounded with them. That I get lost for a while because my husband and I planned to go to Scotts Beach but I took the Heaphy track because I was fascinated by the Nikau palms taking photos and videos of them.
Scotts Beach is a 1-hour track from the campsite. It’s worth to trek as the beach at the back of the mountain offers a very beautiful and relaxing seashore and the strong waves smash the big rocks formation. When we reach Scotts Beach few and a family playing the beautiful sand and lying on the beach watching the big waves. We enjoyed taking photography of the massive huge rock by the seashore.
If you’ve been to this place feel free to leave a comment about your experience and suggest something good to do while staying at Kohaihai campsite.
