Camping Site at Golden Bay!

Abel Tasman National Park is a New Zealand national park located between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay at the north end of the South Island. It is named after Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand and who anchored nearby in Golden Bay[source: wikipedia].

Every year specially during summer season Golden Bay Abel Tasman is one of the favorite tourist destination from international to local folks. Abel Tasman end to end is 51km. and can be completed in hiking/walking for about 3 to 5 days but it depends on your energy of how physically fits you are in hiking. Outdoor enthusiast prefer to camp either cabins, camping vehicle or tent for their accommodation.

My husband and I decided try to camp at Old MacDonalds Farm  located in Marahau at the southern end of the Abel Tasman National Park. This camping site is just 3-minutes walk from the start of the Abel Tasman Coast Track.

Old MacDonalds Farm offers free shower for those who stayed over night. They have shared kitchen, 2 toilet, 2 shower rooms, kettles, micro waves, and plenty of freezer and refrigerator (so your food will not spoil), plenty of gas stove(you can freely cook) and outlets if you need to charge your gadgets.

Our Camping Tent
We have our Kathmandu retreat 180 tent(really good size for 2 people). When we arrive at the Farm just 2 tents has been set up. So we still have a good choice of location and enough space to set up ours. While setting up the tent, sand flies started to bite our legs. So make sure when you visit Abel Tasman Golden Bay you have an insect repellent  spray or lotion.
My husband wants to be comfortable to sleep so we bring queen size airbed and durvey. In Old MacDonalds Farm there’s no outlet power near the camping ground. Since our airbed is electric self pump, we just carry it at the kitchen area where plenty of outlet power.

We position our airbed at the room area of the tent and let our things(scattered) at the entrance area.  Since there are plenty of sand flies we make sure that all the doors and windows of the tent are closed. And apply insect repellent in our legs and arms to avoid sand fly bites. Once you got sand fly bites it will be very itchy and it takes weeks before the sting totally gone.

There are plenty of camping areas in Marahau coz its just near to Abel Tasman National Park. And people love to do camping and do sun bathing specially in Kaiteriteri beach which was sooooo busy and very crowded when we went there. Little Kaiteriteri also have plenty of people and I was amazed of those very beautiful over looking holiday homes and accommodations at the hill.

Enjoying Exploring Golden Bay Abel Tasman!
